Cocaine Test Kit

Often times, drug tests that are required for employment purposes are designed to detect cocaine, as well a multitude of other illegal substances. Usually the test is required prior to beginning the job, but there are also random drug tests that are administered to current employees in some offices. Under U.S. Federal law, companies that hire commercial drivers are required to administer drug tests that test for amphetamines, cannabinoids, opiates, phencyclidine and cocaine.

In addition, at-home drug tests can be purchased online or at local pharmacies.

Benzoylecgonine, which is the metabolite for cocaine, is what many tests look for because it remains in the system the longest.  Testing methods for cocaine include:

  • Blood test

This is most likely to be used to determine whether an individual is under the influence of a drug at a specific time. It is the most invasive form of testing and must be conducted in a professional laboratory. It is also the most expensive type of test, and is usually only performed after an accident to determine if the subject was under the influence at the time of the mishap.

  • Hair test

This involves taking a small sample of hair-usually 1.5 inches in length from the scalp. Hair tests are more expensive than urine and saliva tests and are therefore, not very common. For cocaine, a hair test can detect the presence of the drug quite easily. A hair test can reveal cocaine use up to 90 days after use, but cannot accurately detect current impairment.

  • Saliva test

This is a relatively popular method for detecting illicit drug use.  Saliva tests are non-invasive and are inexpensive. Cocaine can be detected almost immediately in saliva nd will remain detectable for 24 hours after use.

  • Urine test

The most popular choice for drug testing is a urine test. It is the most inexpensive and can detect relatively recent use as well as long-term exposure to the drug.
